Budapest Régiségei 24/1. (1976)

Előszó = Preface = Predislovie 3-7

PREFACE Volume 24 of Budapest Régiségei (The Antiquities of Budapest) differs from the preceding ones not only in form, but in content as well. The results of our research conducted at Obuda, Pest and the Buda Castle are published in four volumes, two text volumes and two volumes of drawings and plates. During the past three years, research at Obuda was conducted in the form of teamwork all year round, without interruption. Adjusting themselves to the programs of building of the large housing estates and industrial districts, the excavating archeologists opened up all important points of Obuda, reconciling the scientific interests with the rapid pace of the works of construction as dictated by modern life. As compared with the practice followed up to now they publish the results of the excavations in an unusual way - in the course of fieldwork, since the excavations are under way even at present - in rough form, so that the work of scientific analysis may begin. Both in the field-work and in the elaboration the youngest archaeologists of the Historical Museum of Budapest, freshly graduated from the university have taken part - just as the researchers of greater professional-experience. Since the Buda Castle is an independent field of research, the results of the excavations conducted there will be published in a separate volume including the report on the Gothic statue finds, and setting out the opinion of the archaeologist who uncovered them also so that the material may become public property also in the form of a publication, and scientific debate may begun also in this respect.
