into the walls of the truncated tower. The capitals as well as the column- and pillar heads decorated with carved acanthus leaves built into the later walls could have been taken similarly from these palaces. All this supports the opinion that the foundation of the castle and town ascribed - relying on historical data - to King Béla IV, could have been only a reconstruction following the Mongol invasion and the fortification of the castle (which is called novus mons Pestiensis. . . de veteri Buda. . . de nova Buda). The continuation of the castle and settlement which also have existed before is proven by vast and tangible remains of buildings, however at the same time there are also data inconsistent with the earlier conception. The new dating of the Castle of Buda rising over the millennial crossing place of the river and defending it, as well as the new topography of the Pest side, together with the results of the recent excavations in Óbuda, have changed the opinion about the beginnings of that town of so special geographic and topographic situation.
