FERENC NOÉH THE SURVEYING AND MAPPING OF THE ÓBUDA EXCAVATIONS The rescue excavations, and the surveying and mapping of the archaeological field work due to the construction of the new housing development at Óbuda had been carried out by the Historical Museum of Budapest and the Budapest Technical University, since the autumn of 1973. The project had to be planned carefully to survey and map the rescue excavations, or rather the later uncovered archaeological objects not necessarily related in time and place so that the smaller or larger units could be easily reconstructed from the drafts made, and to give a background to the future excavations. These conditions were met and in addition the relation to any other engineering works (urban development, public utilities, constructions, land-registry, etc. ) were ensured by establishing a geodetic coordinate system. The determination of detail points were done partially by intersecting and by orthogonal coordinate measuring, but mostly by polar coordinate measuring. The mapping was done in 1:50, of which 1:200 and 1:1,000 diminutive copies were made by photo gramm etric method. The legend on the drafts do not include any dating, it tries to display the objects not to obstruct the natural appearance of the planes and surfaces with little abstction. A sketch placed on each sheet marks the approximate place of the excavation. The matching of drafts is ensured by coordinate points. The list number of the joining sheets can be read on the 1:1,000 sketch. (Figures: 74-75) 307
