MÁRIA PETŐ THE LATEST AQUINCUM WOODEN CASK FIND A Roman wooden cask imbedded in the mud was found north-east of the Aquincum ruin field, at the intersection of the Sujtás Street and the Esztergom railway enhankment in course of the no. 3 pipeline laying works of Buda in seven metres depth. The top and bottom of the cask were not found, its staves though and hoops, also made of wood, were lifted out piece by piece and were taken to be restored. After the staves had been cleaned, the several times repeated text of a branded mark: EXPAC NTR VAL LEG II. AD appeared. The letters THR on the marking-iron unfortunately preserved only in fragmentary condition near the stave of the cask were determined as an abbreviation of the text: p.p. ripae Thraciae. Next to the cask there were the sherds of a 2-3rd century A. D. mortar bowl, a complete clay lamp, and some animal bones. The cask belongs to the earlier excavated and published ceramic workshop at the Gas Works cask finds. (Plates: 206-216) 205
