KRISZTINA SZIRMAI PAINTED FRAGMENT OF A CORNICE FROM OBUDA From the modern rubble layer a trial trench dug opposite to No. 10-12, Vöröskereszt Street Budapest, 3rd district a fragment of a corner cornice turned up at a depth of 100 cm. (Plate 202). The geisone fragment is painted yellow and is 61 cm. high, its shorter side is 138, the longer 151 cm. long. The coffered construction with the corbel pieces and the decorative elements of classical origin can also be found in the similarly unpublished stone relic of unknown provenance in Aquincum. (Plate 201.) The application of classical elements on the narrower side of the pedestal is a provincial characteristic. The use of stylized acanthus leaves resembling oak foliage on this surface is - relying on the two geisone fragments of Aquincum - a local feature of that site. Consequently, the mixed style of the said cornice fragments comprises classical, provincial and local elements. The geisone fragments are the products of one of the stone masons workshops of Aquincum. (Plates: 200-202) 189
