... .« ». . . bono modo . . .«The building regulations in contracts and investigations were supervised by experts: »... espertis mechanicis . . .« Several finds belong to the last period of the Gothic style, the first half of the sixteenth century. The architects although they had opened a new phase in the development could not master a certain clumsiness and cautiousness. Now and then the last rays of a declining art fall on this world, which slowly submerged in provincialism. The houses became desolate, the gifted artists moved to other countries, where the climate was more suitable for artistic creations. Even before the Turks occupied the town, the artistic life of Buda was disintegrating. At the end of the seventeenth century, the new German settlers had no understanding for the mouldering ruins of the Middle Ages and the finest marble works got into the limekiln.
