(NAGY L. 1946) Az Erzsébet híd átépítésére is sor került, a tér újabb átrendezését is tervezték, így lehetőség adódott a római tábor északi falának és patkóalakú tornyainak hitelesítésére. (NAGY T. 1971, horseshoe-shaped tower of the Roman fort (NAGY T 1971, 29—30). Rescue excavations were conducted in the ditch of the waterworks in 1974 (MELIS 1976, 3 13-333; SZIRMAI 1976, 425-426). László Gerevich's investigations suggest that a cella trichora was built over a shrine in the southeastern part of the fort, which was later incorporated into the structure of the Proto-Romanesque church (GEREVICII 1976, 43-54). Recent studies have also focused on the fort (MRAV 1992-1995, 11-19 VISY 2000, 58, KOVÁCS P 2001, 141-168). As can be seen in this short outline of research history in the area, it can be said that Contra Aquincum stood on the left side bridgehead of the Elisabeth bridge, on the left bank of the Danube, facing the Budapest stretch of the limes. The garrison of this military establishment controlled and protected the most important trading routes that led into the DanubeTisza Interfluve into the territories of the Sarmatians and other barbarian tribes.
