(Figure 5) The origin of the destruction layer is uncertain as yet, the find material suggests a date from the turn of the 1 st and 2 nd centuries or even earlier. The conscious abandonment and elimination of the feature is suggested by the fact that only traces of the probably wooden structural building elements were found. The change in the strategic importance of the territory, the establishment of the limes and the consequent modification of the settlement structure at the turn of the 1 st and 2 nd centuries and in the first decades of the 2 nd century may have been the causes that led to the abandonment of the feature encircled by a defence system. The purpose of the territory changed when the final contours of the settlement structure of Aquincum, the capital of the province, became set in the later phases of the Roman period (2 nd-3 rd centuries). (Figure 6) Cemeteries were opened both east and west of the earlier feature encircled by a defence system. This was the time when the northern cemetery of the Military Town was established on its western side. This cemetery remained in use up until the last 3 rd of the 4 th century.
