Kiss The paper is an answer to an article entitled "Opinions on the Intonation of the Hung'arian Sentence or Brassai and the Others" by László Varga (Varga 1985). Varga, on the one hand, criticizes the stress rules proposed by Sámuel Brassai (Brassai 1863—65, 1888, 1889), saying that they can only generate a minority of the stress patterns of the Hungárián sentence, and on the other hand, claims that my statements on the stress and intonation of the Hungárián sentence are identical to those of Brassai, consequently, they are subject to the same criticism. The paper réfutes both claims. It proves that while Brassai*s theory correctly générâtes the basic underlying stress and intonation pattern of the Hungárián sentence, my statements handle a much wider range of data. In the paper I not only summarize but also supplément my previous statements on Hungárián sentence stress, proposing a rule system consisting, among others, of a Nuclear Stress Rule, a Basic Focus Rule, and a Focus Rule, adapting the framework of Selkirk (1984). 52
