554 LÁSZLÓ KDS3ÁN : The economic elite in Nógrád County in the period monarchy of the dualThis study tries to sketch the changes and evaluate the structural change in the economic elite of Nógrád county. It is based on the investigation of lists of "virilists" (that is, the people paying the mast tax and by virtue of this enjoying the right to sit on local government bodies), those paying more than 500 crowns, or, after 1900, 1000 crowns were selected for closer inspection. An answer is sought for the following questions: First, what changes of wealth compared with the baseyear of 1873 characterize the group of people paying the most tax in the county? Then, what changes took place in the social composition of this group as against the social composition of 1873? To put it in another way: Were the former gentlemen able to preserve their earlier social postitions during the formation of capitalist society? Was it the whole of the gentry or just one part of it, in the latter case which part of the gentry was it, that succeeded in preserving his former social status? What way did another important social group, the Jewry find into the ranks of the greatest taxpayers, who may be considered as the local economic elite? To answer these questions, the author concentrated on movements of occupational groups and the change of social composition as reflected by the lists of " virilists ". Besides this basic source and its usual complementaries in studies of this kind — " Compass " directory of companies, papers and documents of the Registrar of Companies etc. —, a highly valuable source was provided by the local press of the day. This county-level-study throws light on the conditions of the " province ", and just because of this it may serve to show direction, speed and stage of bourgeois development or the lack of it. In some aspects this study transcends the limits of the group of greatest taxpayers of just one former county, because the trends of development, the ambitions, social and economic relations of the people living here, the quality of these relations and the lessons of these transcend the limits of local society as well. KÁROLY HALMOS : The Bankrupticy Proceedings of Gudbrand Gregersen in 1869 Although the great depression of 1873 effaced the memory of the economic crisis of 1869 it, as Dr. Kövér went on to state, already predicted the omens of the evil portents of the later one. Lajos Juhász also dealt with the crisis of 1869 in his "The financial crisis of 1869 and the problems of the banks " published in Századok in 1939. He did not advert even briefly To tne case of Gudbrand Gregersen's firm. The bankruptcy of Gundbrand Gregersen's firm, however, was one of the first cases of the socalled " small depression ", and its
