BEÁTA NAGY : The Social Life of the Hungarian Economic and Political Elite in Clubs and Casinos in the Interwar Period The essay deals with the most frequented scenes of the economic and political elite, namely, the Nemzeti Casino, the Országos Kaszinó, the Lipótvárosi Társaskör, and the Rotary Klub. Miss Nagy examines the social life therein mainly in the years of 1928, 1935, and 1941. The essay focuses on the history of the above-mentioned clubs and casinos, and the social structures of their memberships. The members of the Nemzeti Casino and the Országos Kaszinó sprang from the traditional political elite, to wit, the historical aristocracy and squirearchy. The Hungarian bourgeoisie usually joint the Lipótvárosi Társaskör and the Rotary Klub, These clubs and casinos were not only the most important places of the social but the political and economic life in Hungary, as well. Miss Nagy has collected and listed the name of the members of these clubs and casinos; and the findings of this research is based on the social statistics of the elite of the Hungarian political and economic life. PÉTER PIFKÓ : The Role of the Family Relationship in the Cultural Life of Eszter­gom at the End of the Nineteenth Century After the fall of the Hungarian revolution, the cultural life in Esztergom declined. The main scenes of the cultural life, namely, the societies and the associations went through a renewal from the 1860's again. Many associations, societies, friendly and reading circles, and clubs were established. Mr. Pifkó gives an account of th-j history and the activity of the significant societies in Esztergom. The Kaszinó Egylet established in 1837 played the most important role in the culture of Esztergom. The choral society was organized in 1865. The families of the economic and political elite of Esztergom usually belonged to both of them. • The author follows the way of the life of 470 families of Esztergom on the basis of the records and the contemporary newspapers. All of these families played some role in the cultural and public life of the town. He also reconstructs the family connections among them by means of the registers of birth, marriage and death and testaments. Firstly, the lists of the family connections as well as the members of the amateur theatrical company of the Kaszinó Egylet and the choral society were compared. It followed the comparative study of the names of the leaders in the Kaszinó Egylet, the amateur theatrical company and the choral society. The author's conclusion is that twentyfour
