ELŐSZÓ

PREFACE With the assistance of the National Scientific Research Fund it became possible to present the population by mother tongue and nationality of the localities of historical Hungary in publications containing time series.So was the first published in 1991 the volume of 534 pages on the Distribution of localities in Transylvania by nationality (mother tongue) (18501941). The next volumes already publisd contained nationality and mother tongue data of the localities of Upper Northern Hungary (Felvidék), Subcarpathia and of historical Southern Hungary (Délvidék) for the same time period. As the completion of the series two volumes are being prepared with nationality and mother tongue data of localities of Burgenland and the present Hungary. Simultaneously with the launch of the nationality and mother tongue series needs wereexpressed to publish a similar series of volumes for religions. It was promoted by the fact that it was the 1949 Census when last time there were inquiries on religions but in the then social- political situation there was no way to publish religional data by localities.lt became possible after the 1990 political change only. After the publication of the religional data of the 1949 Census by localities we compiled and published in two volumes religional time series of Hungárián localities for the period 1880- 1949 also. Among the data sources used for compiling nationaliy and mother tongue data of historical Southern Hungary we found Jugoslav official statistical tables which contained religional data so that we could publish firstly even for that region religional time series of the localities of historic Hungary which now belong to other countries. Most localities of Upper Northwern Hungary annected to Czechoslovakia according to the 1920 Trianon Treaty belonged to Hungary during the Second World War temporarily.
