METHODOLOGICAL NOTES The following notes are to be kept in mind while using this volume: 1) This publication contains data only of those counties of Romania that were in the territory of Hungary prior to 1920. Therefore, of the 40 counties of Romania, only 16 are covered in this volume. The three geographical units where the 16 counties are distributed, are the following: — Erdély (Transylvania or "Transcarpathian territory" in the old terminology); — Körösvidék-Máramaros ("the left bank of the river Tisza" in the old terminology; — Bánság ("the angle of the rivers Tisza and Maros" in the old terminology. Within each geographical unit, the settlements appear according to the alphabetical order of their Hungárián names. 2) The volume contains tables with data for each county and tables with data for each settlement. Both the county series and the settlement series contain ethnic data of the 1930, 1956, 1966, 1977 and 1992 Románián censuses, as well as mother tongue and religion data of the 1992 census. The county table series contain the data in all details as received from the Románián CSO, i.e. 18 ethnic groups, 18 mother tongues and 20 religions. The settlement table series give details for 5 ethnic groups and mother tongues and 11 religions. 3) The volume contains population size and percentage distribution figures (the latter rounded to two decimais) in both the county series and the settlement series. The rounding of distribution indices was done cell by cell, the sum of the indices may, occasionally, slightly deviate from 100.00. In cases of lack of data (the observed statistical phenomenon did not occur) the cell contains "—" (both at figures at percentages); in cases when the value of the data is too small to express with two decimais, the cell contains "0.00". 4) Within the counties, the settlements appear alphabetically by Hungárián names, in the following order: — county seat; — large towns; — other towns; — villages. The totals published in the settlement series are the following: — totál of the county; — totál of towns; — totál of villages. 15
