úrban areas, the respective rate is much higher in the case of men (11 percent) and somewhat lower for women (5 percent), while in rural areas, they are signifícantly higher for both sexes, especially for men (14 and 7 percent, respectively). Within married couples the differences are less significant, the rates are between 3 and 6 percent, with lower rates in the capital and higher in rural areas. In 1990, in 46 percent of married couples with active earner spouses, both the husband and the wife were manual workers, while in every 4th both of them were non-manual ones. Among consensual unions there was a shift in the balance towards manual workers: more than three fifths of these couples were of manual workers, while only every 7th-8th had bothe partners belonging to non-manual workers. Thus, the share of married couples with heterogeneous composition in this respect, was slightly above that of consensual unions. For the last six years the socio-occupational composition of consensual partners has neared that of legal spouses, even though they haven't equalized yet. While the share of consensual unions with both partners being manual workers diminished from 62 percent in 1990 to 45, the proportion of those with non-manual workers only, grew by 9 percentage points, to almost 22. The share of consensual unions with manual worker male partner and a non-manual female partner increased (by 9 percentage points) alsó, their proportion is now 22 percent. The share of married couples with only manual worker spouses is close to 37 percent, while 29 percent of them are of non-manual worker spouses. Since 1990 the composition of families by the number of children has hardly changed. The share of consensual unions with no child has increased slightly, and that of consensual unions with two children has declined, while among married couples a slight decrease in the proportion of those with no child and a little increase in the share of those with one child can be mentioned. In other categories the rates have remained almost unchanged among consensual unions and married couples as well. At present, in 49 percent of consensual unions and 62 percent of married couples there is at least one child. 25 percent of consensual unions and 28 percent of married couples are living with one child. The share of consensual unions with two children does not reach 15 percent, while the relevant share among married couples nears that of couples with one child (27 percent). The proportion of couples with three children is close to 6 percent in both types of family, while among families with more children, consensual unions are more frequent (3 and 1.5 percent). In 1996, the proportion of consensual unions with children is 42 in the capital, 47.5 percent in other towns and 55 in rural areas. These are by 17, 15 and 6 percentage points lower than the respective rates of married couples. The difference is signifícantly smaller among couples with one child, in the capital the share of married couples this type is only almost 5 percentage point higher than that of consensual unions living there. The shares of couples with two children differ more again, by 13 percentage points in the capital and other úrban areas, and by almost 10 in rural areas. In the case of couples with three or more children, the rates of consensual unions are higher in all categories of locality. The number of children per 100 consensual unions has decreased by 4, to 85 in the 19901996 period, while the same index has grown from 101 to 105 among married couples. At the same time, the difference between the two types of family almost disappears while studying the number of children aged under 15: in 1996 there were 60 school-children per 100 consensual unions and 63 per married couples. This means a decrease in both categories with respect to 1990. In consensual unions with children the average number of children is higher than in married couple families: the respective numbers per 100 families are 175 and 170. 20
