BEVEZETŐ

INTRODUCTION The results of the 1990 population census are published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office in a series of publications. Within the framework of this series the detailed data of the census are published in separate volumes for each county and for the capital. Every volume makes it possible to perform comparisons to the main characteristics with the results of previous censuses and contains the explanation of the concepts used. Compiling the volume on the counties special emphasis was put on the availability of rich data-combinations with regard to the county seats. However, the competent local governments, specialists and scientific research-workers put forward separate demands on information with regard to urban areas of outstanding importance other than the county seats. The official recognition of the singled-out position is when the urban area is declared to be one with county rights. This happened in the county of Csongrád - besides the county seat - also in the case of Hódmezővásárhely. Thus, it is justified that the data of this urban area be published, as a supplement to the county volume, also in a separate volume. The publication with regard to the urban area includes a great number of combined tables in such subjects as demography, educational attainment (employment, unemployment), sectoral and occupational composition, household- and family structure and housing conditions, according to the situation of january 1, 1992. However, in this framework retrospective data could not be published. Detailed information with regard to the concepts used is to be found in the volume "The data of the county of Csongrád". 4
