1990. ÉVI NÉPSZÁMLÁLÁS A fogyatékosok életmódja és életkörülményei (1995)
Bevezető
INTRODUCTION Between 1870 and 1949 all Hungarian population censuses contained questions on the handicapped. On the contrary, the census questionnaires in 1960, 1970 and 1980 omitted this topic. In the preparatory phase of the 1990 census emerged the necessity to collect information — although not on a full-scope basis but on a large sample — on the important stratum of the handicapped. This need was supported by social welfare organisations and institutions, specialinterest organisations of the handicapped as well as by researchers and specialized institutions dealing with the living conditions of these strata. We are convinced that the 20 per cent representative sample of the 1990 census has been appropriate to produce a relevant database for users in processing and analysing the data on the handicapped. Present publication — supported also by the social welfare research programme of the PHARE — summarizes the information collected on the handicapped in the framework of the representative (longer) programme of the 1990 Hungarian census. The main results have been completed with a textual analysis, too. Summary tables also contain, for comparison, some basic characteristics — e.g. sex, age, educational attainment — of the total population. (These data were taken from the full-scope census processing.) The detailed crosstabulations contain the most relevant demographic, occupational and housing data of the handicapped. (However, some tables also include information on the persons living with handicapped ones.) A separate chapter deals with the explanation of the concepts used in the volume. 5
