BEVEZETŐ

INTRODUCTION The Hungarian Central Statistical Office publishes the results of the 1990 population census in a series of volumes. The traditional population census publications are the numbered pieces of the series. Besides, data corrections ensuring comparability with the data of former population censuses or, perhaps, partly or completely lacking from former publications and expected to arise a vivid interest, are also published. This time the data with regard to mother tongue and nationality group-belonging of the 1980 and 1990 population censuses are published by locality lines. The publication contains the urban and rural areas in conformity with the 1990 state administration division; at compiling the 1980 data the changes in names, the promotions of rural to urban areas, the re-annexations of territories, the unifications and the separations of localities between the two population censuses were taken into consideration. For the evaluation of the data of the publication it is to be taken into account that they are based on declarations. The legal rules ordering the conduct of the population census always called the attention of the population to communicate truthful data while the instructions as to the filling-out of the questionnaires always reminded the enumerators that the answers should be registered without any outside influence, especially the answers with regard to the respondents' mother tongue and nationality group-belonging. The volumes 3 to 22 of the 1990 population census volume series contain - combined with other population census information - summarized country-, capital- and county level information about the mother tongues and nationality group-belongings. County time series with regard to mother tongue, nationality group belonging and the knowledge of languages are contained in the publication, in the form of two booklets, entitled "The data of nationality groups of Hungary by counties". One booklet includes the summarized county data in conformity with the 1990 state administration division, while the other contains the same data in conformity with the state administration division at the respective points of time. 6
