1990. ÉVI NÉPSZÁMLÁLÁS Magyarország nemzetiségi adatai megyénként (az 1990. évi államigazgatási beosztás szerint, 1930–1990) (1992)

BEVEZETŐ

INTRODUCTION The Hungarian Central Statistical Office, in its series of publications containing the 1990 population census data, publishes also collections of data which ensure comparability with the respective data of former population censuses though the latter data - however interesting might have been completely or partially missing from earlier publications. This time the group of data relating to national groups - national group-belonging, mother tongue, knowledge of languages - is published in county rows. For the interpretation of the data and of the time series of the present publication the following remarks on methodology and, respectively, the concepts used must be taken into consideration: - the Hungarian population censuses are based on self-reporting. The legal rules ordering the population censuses have always called up the population to report truthful data and the instructions for the enumerators have always stressed the importance to register answers supplied free from all influences, especially with regard to national group-belonging and mother tongue; - the Catholic Serbians (Bunevaci), and the Sokaci and - among the 1960 data - also the Slovenians appear among the Croats; - until 1960 and from 1970 on, the data refer to the population present and to the resident population, respectively; - for comparability the county rows of the former population are published according to the administrative division of January 1, 1990. Relating to the given topic, two further publications are planned. The one is the publication of the same time series relating to the area of the country and administrative division at every point of time complemented by the number of those belonging to the various religions and denominations asked until 1949. In 1980, the data relating to national groupbelonging and mother tongue by localities were not published, so the other volume planned presenting the data on national group-belonging and mother tongue of 1980 and 1990 will fill the gap. 4
