PREFACE The Central Statistical Office published, in accordance with earlier practice, the Russian and English versions of the census methodological volume. At the time of the 1970 census the volume summarizing the most important results had not been prepared. In the course of the 1980 census we published the "36. Summary data" volume, which includes main national results and data combinations, already published in the subject volumes, and other yet unpublished information which might be interesting to the public. This volume contains the most important results of the 15 subject volumes and the 7 working papers published in the census series. This volume does not include the data of the 40 county volumes and the results on 9 towns published separately. Now we publish the Russian and the English versions of the summary volume of the Hungarian censuses - as we did in the case of the methodology volume so the methods and results of the Hungarian censuses will be available for foreigners, researchers and scientific institutions. This publication is the translation of the 36. volume of the census series. The Russian and English versions do not include the figures of the tables only the translation of the headings and lateral texts, so the Hungarian volume is needed to the use of the tables. 3
