At housing estates the proportion of those who belong to the working class is lower than other places. (This holds true first of all for country towns.) THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOUSING ESTATE HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES 561 thousand (15 percent) out of the country's 3 million 719 thousand households live at housing estates. The proportion of housing estate households is highest in county towns, almost 37 percent. Within this latter there are 82 thousand single person households. The proportion of single person households is much lower at the housing estates than other places: at Budapest 16 and 30 percent, in country towns 14 and 21 percent. However, this proportion should not be considered too low; every sixth housing estate flat is occupied by a single, in most cases by an old person. At housing estates the proportion of households which consist of only old persons is relatively low 7. 4 percent contrary to the 20. 6 percent proportion at other places. The reason for this is, that older persons usually obtained flat earlier and they do not incline to change. If they change the reason for the change is usually the demolition of the earlier flat. The proportion of households which consist of old and younger persons is also lower at the housing estates. The explanation for this may be that old persons do not move to housing estates together with their younger relatives, or the younger generations pursuit for independent life. 152
