1980 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Summary data (1984)

VIII. THE CHANGE IN THE SIZE AND COMPOSITION OF HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES

If we examine the composition of family-households by family types - whether the household consists of a couple or single parent with children - we find that almost one third of the family-households consist of a couple without children, more than half consist of a couple with children and 11 percent consist of a single parent with children. The majority - almost four fifths - of the ascending line 2 family households consist of a parent-couple and a children-couple living together. In one fifth of the ascending line 2 family households a couple lives together with a single parent with child or children. The majority of the collateral line 2 family households consist of brothers and sisters, in 59 percent of these households both families are couples, and 35 percent are such households where one family is couple and the other is a single parent with child or children. There are very few such households where both families are a single parent with child or children. These latter represented 17 percent of the households twenty years ago, now their proportion is slightly more than 10 percent. Among the small size households the growth was highest in the number of the single person households (24 percent), the growth in the number of the 2 members households was of almost the same extent (20 percent), the number of 4 members households rose by 14 percent, the number of 3 members households hardly changed, so their was a small decrease in their proportion. The above development of the household size is connected to the growth in the proportion of 1 family households and to the decreasing tendency of 2 family households. Since 1970 the number of only inactive earner households increased by almost three fifths, and the number of households with neither active nor inactive earner member decreased by almost one third. The group of these households include also those households where an active earner member is away for occupational purpose and live in institutional household. In the seventies, as a result of the decentralized development of industry, the number of these households decreased by 50 percent, since the possibilities for finding suitable employment at the place of residence were growing for the active earner members of the households. In 31 percent of the households there is one, in more than one third of the households there are two, and in every tenth household there are 3 or more active earner members. In the course of the 120
