1970 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Information on the data collection and processing (1977)

I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 7. The preparation, programme and organization of the data processing

7. The preparation, programme and organization of the data processing a/ THE FINDINGS OF THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS The preliminary data of the census were obtained from two different sources: a/ by means of summarizing the data of the recapitulation forms of the census districts (partly by manual work, partly on electronic machines); b/ from a sample survey of the questionaries based on 1 per cent representativity. Results could be obtained quickly both in the course of the former census, both in 1970, by means of the processing of the recapitulation forms of the census district, i. e. of the recapitulation forms of the communities, the rows of which have shown the final results of the latter. The aggregation of the registration forms of the census districts into settlements took place by manual techniques, while the table showing the final results was composed by means of a simple tabulation programme executed on electronic machines by using of these data. The processing of the 1 per cent representative sample could be regarded p.s the final control of the full material of the census by means of using the software developed on this purpose. The coding and processing system of the representative sample is identical with the full-scale processing; it differs from it, however, in the publication, to the extent complying with the sample size. b/ THE CHECKING OF THE REGISTRATION OF PERSONS HAVING DOUBLE RESIDENCE When expounding the definition of several notions in the above it was mentioned that the data of the census of 19 70 were estimated according to the categories of the present, the resident and the permanent population. In order to perform this duty, the registration of the population both in its permanent and its temporary domicile as well as in its eventual place of abode had to be ensure. According to earlier experiences, the registration of the population according to the place of abode gave acceptable results. Both during the census of 1960 and in the micro-census of 1968, the number of the present and absent persons significantly differed, notwithstanding that these figures should not have differed but to the extent of the difference showing itself between the foreigners residing in Hungary and the Hungarian citizens staying abroad. 57
