1970 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Information on the data collection and processing (1977)
I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 11. The control of the reliability of the census
Occupational relations and type of work Similarly to individual occupation, the gross error is significant here too: 35,44 percent, compared with which the net error is considerably lower (4, 69 percent). In connection with the outstandingly high percentage proportion of gross errors however the circumstance mentioned in the methodological description must be taken into consideration, i. e. the gross error contains the wrong entries twice: once because they are missing from the right rubric, secondly because they figure in the wrong rubric. Even if the gross error is about 50 percent, the proportion of correctly grouped items is 70-80 percent and in the statistical data affected by the net error the + errors cancel each other. However, in the declarations -there is some upward bias, namely the efforts to get into a group on a higher educational level are striking. The census returns contain surplus in the groups of mental labour, just like this there is overestimation in the case of skilled workers and even semiskilled workers. All this affects percentage distribution only in the case of mental labour (the difference between percentages is 1, 77). The opposite of this can be best seen in "other physical labour". Since post-enumeration control is based on data from the employers, its correctness cannot be doubted but the more particular reason for deviation would require more thorough examination. It is also remarkable that in the rubrics of collective farmers the census shows certain surplus as opposed to the employed (Table 9). Table 9.
