Egy 19. századi díszlegyező restaurálása és részleges rekonstrukciója
Műtárgyvédelem 37-38 layers of the cardboard ground. To make good the parts missing from the leather imitation paper which covered the ground layer, embossed paper was painted and cut to the appropriate size. Gaps in the gilding used to decorate the edges were made good with paper prepared using the original technique: gold leaf on a bole ground. Damaged and incomplete leather parts were repaired using goatskin coloured with metal-complex dye and supplied with a grain pattern the same as the original. Replacement of the slats raised ethical questions. From the statics standpoint, new ones were not warranted: they would not have impacted upon the artefact’s stability. However, in the interests of displaying the artefact, as well as of forming an aesthetic and uniform picture of the fan, fitting them seemed indispensable. A decision was therefore made to make replacement slats. The design of the marbled paper needed to cover the repairs to the surface of the fan could not be deduced on the basis of the original artefact and no analogies were available. Instead, therefore, paper whose ground colour matched that of the original surface were painted with blotches and then applied. The producing of the sheet-printed gilding on the replacement slats and leather bands represented a real challenge, since printing blocks had to be made that produced a design fully the same as the original. These were produced from zinc alloy using a computer-controlled milling machine.
