Műtárgyvédelem 37-38 white. Mixtures of smalt and lead white or indigo and lead white were observed in the samples taken from the light blue motifs. Collagen, ovalbumin, and gums were identified in the paint as binders. The once bright blue surfaces painted with smalt are greyish, showing different levels of colour change in this pigment. SEM-EDX investigations have already proved the changed ratio of silica and potassium in the smalt pigments owing to degradation. Orpiment gives the yellow, lead red the orange, and lead white (in some places mixed with gypsum) the white colour of the different motifs. The stratigraphy of the orange background of the tazar shows that there are three layers on top of each other. The first one, painted directly onto the wood, contains orpiment, while the second is a darker yellow containing orpiment mainly. The third layer is orange; it is a mixture of various arsenic compounds. The restoration of the ensemble began with the conservation of a niche frame as a degree project at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2008. The other elements of the same wall were restored in the past few years. A mixture of bone and skin glue was used to stick the broken elements. The varnishes and paints applied later were removed with ethyl acetate, in some places with a 1:1 mixture of ethanol and acetone. A thin brownish layer, most likely caused by the binding media of an earlier consolidation, could not be removed, owing to solubility properties that were similar to those of the original paint layers. Fish glue was used to consolidate the flaking paint layers; plaster of Paris mixed with animal glue was applied to make good the missing parts in the ajami decoration and the gaps in the ground layer. Moderate retouching was carried out with watercolours, and with pigments mixed with lacquer for the lustre on the metal foil. Finally, a protective layer of Paraloid B67 in white spirit was applied to the surface.
