Római kori falkép-töredékek lézeres tisztítása
Kisapáti Ivett - Márton Zsuzsanna * Római kori falkép-töredékek lézeres tisztítása The laser cleaning of wall-painting fragments from the Roman period Ivett Kisapáti — Zsuzsanna Márton Tie cleaning of Roman-era wall-painting fragments by means of lasers — as an alternative to traditional methods — was investigated using different settings for the devices. By setting our lasers appropriately, it was possible to remove from the surfaces of wall-painting fragments strongly attached calcite encrustation varying in thickness and composition without damaging the paint layer beneath. It was also possible to remove the Plextol B 500 film layer used for the salvage of the fragments that appeared locally on the paint layer as well. Along with the binding media, the encrustation, too, was removed from the surfaces. The reactions of the pigments used corresponded to those we encountered earlier; hence Egyptian blue and lime white showed no alteration of colour at all. Nor did the colour of yellow ochre undergo any change. On the other hand, a KrF laser (248nm) was used to clean red ochre, since when a Nd:YAG laser was employed, the paint layer became darker. In line with our experiences earlier on, wetting with distilled water improved the cleaning process in most cases; however, we found that it caused yellowing of lime white. Consequently, we did not use distilled water in this case. All in all, it may be said that when the correct settings are used, laser cleaning is a good alternative to traditional cleaning procedures when the paint layer is not sensitive to the chosen laser wavelength. In the case of hard, calcite encrustation, its removal using a laser can be ten times quicker than its removal using a scalpel.
