The work was completed in 1730 by his wife,Marie- Madeleine de Saint-Croix, following the general’s death two years earlier. The property was later inherited by the general’s granddaughter, Ludmilla Forgách, who was widowed while young. When she remarried, her second husband, Count István Eszterházy de Galántha, became the new master. It was at his request that Ferenc Lieb, a painter from Igló, created its rococo wall paintings in the 1770s. Lieb was an itinerant painter without formal training who was active in the period 1758-1788, mainly in the north-eastern region of Hungary. In a set of six rooms on the first floor of the palace, valuable, distinctive, and characterful works by the artist may be seen. The rich, rococo, figurái and decorative creations represent unique and very high-quality examples of the wall painting to be found in Hungarian palaces. Based on the scheme he made for the commission, Ferenc Lieb depicted on the ceilings figures and scenes from mythology, along with allegorical figures; he composed on the lunettes genre pictures of aristocratic life formulated with a cheerful humour. His assistants supplied the walls with rich decorative painting which featured patterns reminiscent of silk wallpaper. The rococo wall paintings were made using a mixed technique: the details were made using the fresco-secco technique; in places, gilding and silvering were also employed. In 2009, the National Authority for Historical Monuments invited tenders for the complete rehabilitation and renovation of the palace and its surroundings. The project was implemented with support from the European Union. The restoration of the wall paintings took place between November 2009 and October 2011, as part 174
