Gherdán K. et al. • A soproni sírlelet körgallérjáról származó fémfonalak the undisturbed cross-section of historical metal threads in detail. These direct observations showed that historical metal threads have strong nano- and microscale textural inhomogeneities (corrosion holes, and primary, as well as corrosion-formed, chemical inhomogeneities). This justifies the view that besides surface analytical techniques, FIB/SEM analysis should be used routinely when characterising historical metal threads and their manufacturing techniques.
