Excavations at the Goat Church, Sopron Gabriella Gabrieli Between 1996 and 2011, the church and the monastery belonging to it were researched from the standpoints of architectural history and archaeology. As well as data relating to the evolution of the complex, the excavations also yielded a rich assortment of artefacts. The medieval cemetery on the site, 17th—18th-century sepulchral vaults, individual burials earlier than these vaults, and individual burials contemporaneous with them, were all excavated and appraised. From the viewpoint of the present study, it is the textile finds that merit our attention. One burial excavated on the northern walkway of the monastery’s cloister yielded clothing of a 16th-cen- tury man. Built in the 1760s, a sepulchral vault beneath the church’s chancel contained 55 loculi for coffins. From it, the clothing of Baroness Anna Joanelly, wife of Baron Jakab Meskó, was recovered almost completely intact. Also below the chancel is the former Viczay sepulchral vault, below the steps leading down to which was a burial. From this burial was recovered the 16th-17‘h-century, richly decorated women’s attire made according to the Spanish taste which constitutes the subject of this series of studies.
