At the time of restoration, an important consideration was the preservation of the original mortar in the fragment, and the fashioning of a lightly-constructed support for it. The principal aim of the restoration was the keeping together of the opus tesselatum and the nucleus layers, the most complete preservation possible of the work in its material.
