Schrett László - Lukács Katalin - Győri Lajos: A százhalombattai Isten Anyja Születése templom ikonosztázának restaurátori kutatása
Műtárgyvédelem 35 1875). Later on, in 1968, repairs and minor alterations were made to the screen. The iconostasis of the church is clearly not contemporaneous with the building itself: it must have been made earlier, for a church that was larger. Hungary’s Office for Cultural Heritage Protection judged restoration of the reverse side of the iconostasis to be necessary on account of an ongoing infestation by insects. Conservation involved removal of the icon panels from the screen so that the beams could be replaced. On the basis of the opinion of a jury consisting of experts, investigation of the icons, the doors, the rood, and the icon screen was performed, along with the restoration at the same time of the reverse side using restora- tor methods. During the research, photometric investigations were performed, and also investigations which involved the taking of samples. Answers were sought to the following questions: In what condition was the existing painted decoration and gilding? Which elements were of the same age? What kind of earlier, perhaps uniformly discoverable, layers could be found underneath the repainting? Based on examination of research windows and investigation of thin cross-sections using a microscope, it could be established that the original marbled painting on the icon screen was not to be found on every part of it. On the basis of the investigations, the icons, the icon screen, and the ornamentation of the last mentioned may come from many different places and times. The original icons did not belong to the icon screen: their installation there was secondary; they were modified and they were repainted. The sole uniform period in the knowable history of the iconostasis was the period after 1875. The reconstruction and restoration of the iconostasis caused no damage to any layer of it, and made it aesthetically more acceptable than its condition hitherto.
