Rátonyi Dávid: Egy jezsuita faragómester élete és elfeledett szobrának története, restaurálása (Baumgartner Bernát: Apostolfigura, 1735-1737)
Rátonyi Dávid • Egyjezsuita faragómester élete és elfeledett szobrának története, restaurálása The other problematic surface beside the preserved lustre was the interior of the cloak since the underlying ochre layer sensitively reacted to chemical treatments while the blue repainting was thick and resistant. The latter one was first thinned with a glass pencil and then the remaining blue repainting was removed with 10 % solution of Na2COr The consolidation of the object was indispensable because of the significant insect deterioration. It was saturated with 20 % solution of Paraloid B 72 in nitro-reducer. The reconstruction of the lustre needed great care: finally, the combined method of the application first of a gold varnish layer over the silver and then of burnt carmine oil paint proved the best, which gave the ultimate colour of the lustre. The binding material was Paraloid B 67. On the request of the owner, the missing hand was replaced by a reconstruction. A gluey-chalky sealant painted to a greenish colour was used for the body colour and the sealing of the missing areas of the pedestal, which was then covered with a retouch of the mixture of acryl binding material and powder colour. The statue was coated with a protective layer of cyclohexanol resin except for the tunica. Having finished his work in Esztergom, Baumgartner moved to Vienna where he lived further developed his art until 1743. Later, he returned to Székesfehérvár. From 1763 he worked in Kolozsvár and while he was staying there, the Jesuit order was suppressed. His further fate is unknown.
