Conservation of an 18th century leather-covered saddle Zsuzsanna Várhegyi The conserved leather-covered saddle is owned by the Small Collections Department of the Museum of Applied Arts. Its provenance and date of production are not known and it does not have an inventory number. The interesting feature of the saddle is that leathers of diverse types and tanning were used in the cover, and the surfaces of the cover and the straps were dyed to a blue colour. The blue leather was decorated with white ornaments and trimmings, which were fixed with blue silk thread. The object of art was in a poor physical condition, it was dusty and dirty. The leather desiccated, deformed, a large area of the dyed surfaces was worn off, and the rest was peeling. Numerous tears and missing areas were observed on 181
