THE RESTORATION OF A CHASUBLE FROM THE 1 S ITI CENTURY

Abstract: The chasuble was restored for the permanent exhibition of the Hungarian National Museum which opened in 1996. According to the inventory the object dated from the 17th century. Recent research, however, places the date of the chasuble to the 18th century. Although it is accepted that it was manufactured in Hungary, an oral communication by Emese Pásztor, art historian, suggests that it may have been made in Russia. The basic fabric of the chasuble is dark blue univclvet. It is decorated with applied raised metal-threaded era- broideiy. It was trimmed with metal-threaded bobbin lace. The lining was made of silk damask. The chasuble was separated into its parts and then cleaned. The velvet with an embroidery ornament was supported by cotton to which the detached embroidery parts were fastened. The missing outlines were filled in with metal threads. Finally, the garment was put back together following the original pattern.
