Restaurálás - Konzerválás - Károlyi Györgyi - Bedő Csongor - Schütz ZoltáN: A budapesti Petőfi téri orthodox Nagyboldogasszony-templom ikonosztázionjának restaurálása

During the World War II., the tower of the church on the left side was bombed, and the top of the iconostasis damaged almost entirely. In 1948 reconstruction and restoration works started. The works stopped at the second level of the iconostasis possibly for reasons of material interest. Our restorer group has got the task to continue the undone restoration works in 1992. Survay A schematic drawing was made from the large iconostasis (17,30 x 17,80 m), on which the different pieces were signed by different numbers. This way the result of the survay could have been put into a table. The table could have been used frequently during the documentation and the practical work. By the coloring of the table the extension of the reconstruction tasks and the photo documentation (250 pieces) could have been signed. Another drawing was made (M = 1 : 20) on which the missing parts were signed also. It was used as a basis for the drawings M = 1 : 1. These drawings could have been used as moulds, and made possible the fragments to put into their original places. Reconstruction and restoration The main steps were the following:- Taking the structure into pieces- Detaching the easel paintings and painting on metal plate from the wooden support- Temporary fixing of the painted surfaces of the easel painting- Lining of easel paintings- Cleaning: easel paintings, paintigs on metal plate, panel paintings, gildings and metalling, structure- Completion by carving was made by lime tree according to the original- Completion of colours: on the paintings by oil paints, on the other parts by distemper technique gilding according to the original techniques- Protective coating: by 1 : 1 mixture of matt varnish and dammar- Reconstruction: Carving from lime tree, based on the fragments, original photocopies, and paint traces on the sruclure- Rebuilting- Documentation - photo and text The task was the restoration of a functioning object, that is why the total reconstruction was necessary. Nearly 20 m2 surface from the very rich plant ornamental carvings were missed. The restoration works of the iconostasis were made by eight experts during 1,5 years.
