THE EFFECT OF PLASTIC FOLDERS ON VARIOUS TYPES OF PAPER Abstracts: The effect of PVC and polyester foil folders (sealed on three sides) on the encapsulated papers of various compositions and pH was studied in the National Széchenyi Library in Hungary. The aim of these investigations was to establish the composition and pH value that makes either the neutralization of papers necessary prior to encapsulation or the application of alkaline paper lining. In addition to pH values, the papers’ bending fatigue and tensile strengths were measured without the folders and in various cross-combinations between treatments (neutralization, artificial aging, alkaline paper lining) and folder types. The evaluation of results led to the following conclusions: 1. For papers characterized by pH values between 5 and 6, the best solution is the use of polyester folders with alkaline paper lining. If the back side is not supposed to be covered, polyester folders may be used without lining. PVC folders, however, are not recommended. 2. Papers characterized by pH values between 3 and 5 must be neutralized and stored in polyester folders. Should neutralization be impossible, alkaline paper lining is required. PVC folders are not recommended. 3. In the case of alkaline papers, neutralization and polyester folders without alkaline lining are appropriate. Optionally, PVC folders may also be used. On the 61
