RESTORATION OF THE SWORD OF KIJEW Abstracts: The historically and artistically outstanding, loth century double-edged, straight viking sword’s silver-plated hilt- coating is decorated with the similar or same tendril-leaf- palmettc carved motifs, as on the purse-plates of the Hungarian Conquest Period. From beneath the thick corrosion, which is covering the quard and the hilt- button, marks of inlay (so called tausir) gleam out. Radiographs, which were taken before restoration, testified to the presence of motifs. To avoid damaging the decorations, we used a very rarely used restoration method, which is the reason for this publication. First of all, according to the restoration plan, they made the necessary physical and chemical tests. The article describes and analyses the different types of corrosion, which were produced over the past ten centuries and their effects on artefacts. Within this task, how the precious metal-fibers covered with corrosion were moved during the centuries. The author describes the only method, which is suitable in such cases of restoration: the partially moved and embedded into the corrosion, fibers were cleaned under microscope and the cemented corrosion layer was removed. The tiny mechanical tools: the high-speed polishing-stones, rubber-stones, Sparers, lanceta, glass-pencils, etc, helped in restoring the original appearance of the beautifully crustificatcd surface. The author describes the fixing of the loosened parts, the fastening of the corrosion- bed of inlay (tausir), the necessary completions, the passivation and conservation of the artefact. Finally, he determines the appliability of this method and adverted to the ethycal relations as well.
