FEKETE, Lajosné The restoration of a "meditative chair" from Hódmezővásárhely - Summary The characteristics and the development of this special object type are surveyed, together with traditions concerning its use. The restoration of a "meditative chair" from the collection of the Tornyai János Museum (Hódmezővásárhely) is presented in details. The dusty-greasy contamination from the surface of the object was removed by denatured alcohol, the cleaning proper was performed by a mixture of amylacetate (50 ml), turpentine (150 ml) and ethylalcohol (600 ml). It was discovered in course of opening the paint layer, that the object had been re-painted several times. Four different inscriptions were found in course of cleaning, that are, proceeding towards the wooden base, as follows: 1. layer: SZÉL JÁN0SNÉ 1815, 2. layer: SZÉL PAL 1815, 3. layer: SZÉL PÁL URAMÉ 1813, and the lowermost 4th inscription read as: SZÉL PÁL ANNO 1815. Consulting with the museologist, only this last inscription was preserved, and the layers of subsequent painting has been removed, after proper documentation, using the solvents described above. After a cleaning in layers, the complete surface of the object was varnished with a mixture of artists, quality linseed oil and turpentine (1:1) . List of figures 1.
