PREFACE The present volumes of the Protection of Museum Art Objects (Múzeumi Műtárgyvédelem 16-17) contain studies on the protection, conservation and reconstruction of objects of art made of wood. The great number of contributions to this topic testifies to, apart from the versatility of the subject, the sound scientific and technical basis of the treatments applied. The unified way of approach to this subject - which is, however, not uniformized, but a lively and creative type - is a result of a consequent training policy and practice followed in Hungary now more than a decade on. This means secondary level education as well as high-school training for the restorers involved in the conservation of objects. As high-school training of conservators is available on different specialized fields apart from wood restoration, it is hopefully expected that thematical issues on other types of materials can be expected to be published in the future within the volumes of Protection of Mueseum Art Objects. The results archived by restorers, however, are only based upon, but not automatically achieved by training in tiself. It is equally important to keep up with recent results, publications and achievements. In this spirit the thematical Conferences have been arranged for the Hungarian restorers' community as well as Seminars organized with international participation. We hope to continue organizing these meetings for the benefit of the conservators and restorers. Among the papers published here, we find the theses of young experts just graduated at the Conservators' High School courses, studies on theoretical problems as well as documentative communications on our everyday work in the restorer workshops of museums and monuments. Most of them were presented lately on open sessions in the form of a lecture. We are especially delighted by the great number of contributions from the young generation of restorers apart from the papers of the more experienced who publish their results for long. It is a nice example for the fruitful collaboration of different generations, whose results are based on each others' achievements. 20
