strengthened by a thin Glutofix solution and stuck back on the drugs by Glutofix to which Planatol was added. Certain chemicals were kept in paper bags. The cleaning of the bags took place as described above, while for completions Japanese velium and cast paper were used. The chemicals were first placed in laminated Japanese tissue and then back into their original satchels. The vials of the medicine chest were stained both inside and outside so that often it was impossible to see their contents. Most of the corks and the vegetable drugs themselves were damaged by insects and covered in mould. The drugs were cleaned and disinfected as described above. The vials were washed with Evatriol in water and dried. Labels which came off during washing were stuck back by acacia gum which was most probably identical with the substance applied originally. The broken and incomplete vials were completed by taking the silicone negative of the intect ones with Viapal (polyesther). After drying the completed parts were smoothed and polished. Brittle and worn but yet complete corks were restored as suggested by pharmacists: the corks were boiled in a 2% solution of gliceriné, brushed over by a 1% solution of Eulán and after drying they were softened by a cork softening tool. Completely disintegrated corks were replaced by old but intact ones from the Pharmac Museum in Kőszeg. Storing of the medicine chest and its contents is not an easy task after restoration. Organic substances like wood, the vegetable drugs and the paper involved require a relative hunidity of 60-75% at 20 °C, while the metal perts need a lower level than that. Therefore VPI a vapour-phase product containing an inhibitor (dicyclohexyl-ammonium-nitrate) was applied for the protection of the metals since this has already been found useful in the Semmelweis Medical History Museum. At'the.end of her essay the author points out that there are only few medicine chests with their full-scale contents referred to in the international technical literature although 266
