The thick varnish layer covering the table has turned yellowishbrown in the course of time. The 2-mm thick priming of the oval table top which was decorated by bouquets of tulips, roses and forget-me-nots painted on a turouoise base was missing from almost half of the surface. The profiled edges were damaged and the bouquets painted on the legs were almost completely worn down. The varvings were also broken off. After thorough examination the object was found to have been mended previously in an inexpert way. In the course of its present restoration the object was taken to its structural elements, the thick layers of glue removed by toothing plane and the pieces stuck again by Weginol. Unpainted surfaces were treated by a 2% solution of pentachlorophenol for preventive disinfection. Replacements of the missing carvings were made from wood before cleaning. The flaking paint layer on the table top was reattached with a 20% solution of glue dissolved in water by ironing. For cleaning a mixture of 4 parts of methanol, 2 parts of turpentine and 1 part of amyl acetic esther was employed. Then followed the replacement 130
