Having described the role of gold in the history of mankind, its occurrences and exploitation, author analyzes the different variations of two ancient methods of gold refining, that of cupellation and cementation, as well as later procedures introduced during the Middle Ages like quartation and the application of sulphides. Finally on basis of the book entitled Aranyiinomitó (Gold refiner) by László Debreczeni, he depicts the techniques of medieval gold fining and the social background of the refining of gold.

Nach Beschreibung der Rolle des Goldes in der Geschichte der Menschheit, sein Vorkommen und seine Verbreitung, analysiert der Verfasser die verschiedenen Varianten der zwei Methoden — Kupellierung und Zementierung — des antiken Goldscheidens, sowie die während des Mittelalters eingeführten neueren Verfahren, die Quartation und das Sulfidverfahren.
