LINDQUIST, Thea: Clement von Radolt (1593–1670): A Multifarious Career in the seventeenth-century Imperial Service

Thea Lindquist point he had only been in the Imperial service a short time, the Emperor sent a representative to the wedding with the gift of a silver and gold-gilt wine service.68 Little is known about the lady or her background, but in any case the marriage did not last long - Anna Susanna died the following year at age 19, presumably in childbirth or as the result of one of the many illnesses associated with it.69 Radolt married again soon thereafter, in 1628. This time his bride was Helena Constantia, daughter of Jakob von Scholz, a former vice chancellor of Lower Austria.70 Together they had two sons - Wolf Franz and Johann Anton - and two daughters - Benigna Constantia and Maria Teresia.71 Radolt also managed to outlive his second wife, and in February 1640, he wed for the last time. His bride was Magdalena, Countess of Nieva, the widow of Hofkammer councilor Hieronymus Bonacina.72 She came from an established Spanish noble line.73 Radolt and Magdalena had several children, but only one, Franz Galeazzo, survived to adulthood.74 08 HKA, FA R-10, f. 7: 23 July 1626; HKA, HFB 716 (1626), f. 228. 69 Anna Susanna was buried in the south aisle of St. Stephan’s Cathedral. Although Radolt’s name is engraved on the marker there, he was actually buried in the family vault in the Dominican Church. (8 50 Jahre St. Stephan, p. 214; Flarrer: Wien, vol. 3, p. 173). 711 WStLA, GB 1/14, f. 259; HKA, FA R-10, ff. 11-12: 19 July 1628. The Emperor again gave the couple a silver and gold-gilt beverage service. This type of gift was apparently standard issue for an Imperial official of Radolfs rank. (HKA, HZAB 76 [1625-1629], f. 361: 7 Aug. 1628). The bride’s father, Jakob von Scholz, was also dean of the law faculty, like Radolt, and rector at the University of Vienna. (Niederösterreichische Statthalterei, p. 433). 71 Maria Teresia was baptized on 29 May 1636 and Johann Anton on 12 May 1639. (Koczirz, Anton: Österreichische Lautenmusik zwischen 1650 und 1720. Studien zur Musikwissenschaft, 5 [1918], p. 54 n. 2). 72 Pfarrarchiv St. Stephan, Protocollum Copulatorum, vol. 16, f. 152; Koczirz: Österreichische Lautenmusik, p. 55. Magdalena lived until 1662, when she died of obstructed kidneys at age 51. (Koczirz: Österreichische Lautenmusik, p. 55 n. 5). For more on Hieronymus Bonacina and his financial activities, see d ’ El vert : Geschichte der böhmischen Länder, vol. 3, pp. 364-366, 375- 377 and passim, and vol. 4, pp. LXV1-LXVII and passim. Magdalena brought financial as well as social assets to the marriage. She had claim, for instance, to her previous husband’s bonus of 100,000 florins. She was allocated 1,000 florins a year for five years (1640-1645) as interest payments but made an official request for a quarter of the total in 1642. She received payments on this latter claim through 1646 and most likely was successful in obtaining the entire 25,000 florins. This was no mean sum when one considers Radolt’s annual salary was 1,300 florins, though judging from the amounts of money he loaned to the crown, he was not in dire need of it. (HKA, HZAB 87 [1641], f. 185, HZAB 88 [1642], ff. 292-293, 307, HZAB 90 [1644], ff. 129-130, HZAB 92 [1646], f. 171; d ’ Elvert : Geschichte der böhmischen Länder, vol. 4, pp. LXVII, 167, 198,215). 73 Henry IV of Castile bestowed the title upon the first count, Diego Lopez de Züniga, in 1466. The counts of Nieva held the lordship of Valverde de la Vera in the present province of Caceres, not far from Avila and Toledo. The lordship came to the first count through his marriage to Leonor, Nino de Portugal. The fourth count, Diego Lôpez de Zuniga y Velasco, experienced a short but notorious tenure as viceroy of Peru in the mid-sixteenth century. (Gran enciclopedia de Espana, 1990 ed., s.v. “Nieva, Condado de” and “Lopez de Züniga y Velasco, Diego”). 74 Koczirz: Österreichische Lautenmusik, p. 55 n. 6.
