LY-TIO-FANE, Madeleine: Contacts between Schönbrunn and the Jardin du Roi at Isle de France (Mauritius) in the 18th Century. An Episode in the Career of Nicolas Thomas Baudin
96 Madeleine Ly-Tio-Fane Boos arrived in Bourbon in October and spent the month there28). He toured the island in the company of Joseph Hubert, went up from Saint Benoit to the Salazes, the point of intersection of the three Cirques of Salazie, Mafate and Cilaos around the Piton des Neiges. He noted the influence of altitude on the vegetation and the possibility of growing fruit trees of temperate climates, an achievement in which Hubert took great pride. During the journey they encountered the hot lava from the volcano. The descent was made towards the Quartier de la Riviére d’Abord and thence to the fief of the Pamys,.Quartier St. Paul, where he took ship for Isle de France. As he sailed, he saw from afar the magnificent sight of the volcano in eruption29). On the 12th December 1787, Céré wrote to the Minister of Marine, Castries, to give him some information on the transactions which had preceded the departure of Boos from Isle de France, and he enclosed a list of plants and seeds sent to the Emperor. Boos had chartered ‘La Pepita’, commanded by Captain Baudin, for the sum of eighty thousand livres, to conduct him to Trieste. The deed had been drawn up on the 28th November 1787 by the King’s notaries at Isle de France, J. P. Auffray and D. V. Touraille, and approved on the 3rd December by Judge Ignace Brunei acting for the Admiralty, Céré being a witness30). In his letter of 12th December Céré recommended Baudin to Cobenzl: ‘M. Boos et sa riche collection sont confiés, M. le Comte, á un capitaine franco is aussi distingué par ses talents que par son honnéteté. C’est lui qui ayant passé M. Boos du Cap de Bonne Espérance ici a eu pour lui tant d’égards et d’attention, qu’il se l’étoit attaché de la maniére la plus forte: c’est encore lui que Sa Majesté Impériale a été chercher pour le service d’un vaisseau d’un de ses sujets délivré des Barbaresques et qu’elle a décoré de la Croix de 1’Ordre de St. Philippe. On ne sait lequel des deux dé- siroit plus vivement: de M. Boos d’avoir un capitaine semblable, aussi honnéte et complaisant pour les ramener en Europe, ou de M. Baudin de passer M. Boos et son immense collection et de trouver une nouvelle occasion de prouver ä sa Majesté Impériale son empressement et son dévouement quand il s’agiroit de son service. M. Baudin aprés un voiage de quelques mois dans ces mers-ci, et qu’il auroit pü de faire encore d’une maniére aussi lucrative pour lui, n’a pu tenir M. le Comte au penchant qui l’en- tralnoit ä chercher les occasions de faire quelque chose qui pu étre agréable ä Sa Majesté Impériale, aussi a-t-il frété son vaisseau pour la mission de M. Boos ä un prix au dessous de célúi alloué par le commerce pour le tonnage dönt il est, et afin d’avoir la préférence pour un transport semblable . . .’31).
