But the French Government refused me permission to pass through France so we only lost the precious time of five days by landing at Marseilles. We proceeded to Gibrartár where we unfortunately did not arrive but 24 hours after the departure of the English Packet Boat bound for Southampton so that the Steam Boat on board which I am now embarked and which arriving at Gibraltar on the 15 tn inst, left it the very same evening was the very first, means of conveyance I was in the condition to avail myself of. Captain Long was still so kind as to be willing my return with the Steam Boat which leaves England on the 27 th inst. to arrive at Gibraltar; my return by that Boat being though practicable as we calculated her only to make five days from Gibraltar to Southampton —and I most thankfully accepted this arrangement though it reduced my staying in England to only six days and would have caused myself and my wife (both suffering much on sea) by returning to Gibraltar and making 25 days again on board the Mississippi to New York —to be some twenty days longer on sea than proceeding directly from Iiiverpool to New York. But again unfortunately it turned out that the English Packet Boat makes from Gibraltar to Southampton not 5 but eleven days (stopping at Cadiz, Lisbon and Vigo) so that I can not arrive in England but on the 25—26, consequently not return with the 27 th October but only with the 7 th november and not be at Gibraltar again sooner than the 18 th november which would the arrival of the Mississippi to New York under not unfavorable circumstances retard so far as to the second half of December. Besides I was officially informed by Captain Long already previously that any delay at this late season would render my associates as well as the officers and crew of the Mississippi Frigate liable to endure many sufferings by the excessively severe and stormy weather on approaching at a late season the coast of America. » I must have felt bound in honor and in conscience not even to request such a longer delay which must have been accom-
