IDEGEN NYELVŰ ÖSSZEFOGLALÓK - The Making of Hungary’s First General Map in the first Decade of the 19th Century. The Cartographic Enterprise of János Lipszky

Lajos Schedius jointly with engineer SÁMUEL BLASCHNEK intended to publish a corrected version of the Lipszky-map and used more recent maps of the Building Directorate of the Council of the Governor-general for the correction. The selected scale also refers to the original source and it is exactly the same (1:480,000); thus the map was printed on nine pages. This map may not be considered a new piece of work; rather it is simply a corrected and rectified version of Lipszky’s map. János Lipszky’s cartographic legacy (Chapter 8) This chapter provides an exhaustive catalogue of Lipszky-maps. Although the Fons historical magazine has published the list earlier, its inaccessibility and new data justify its repeated publication in this volume in order for all information on the topic to be available in one monograph. The compilation is supplemented by the presentation of scrolls of most important map versions. Documents (Chapter 9) This is a collection of full text and exact location of the most important archival sources for the cartographic activities of János Lipszky and his colleagues. The full text reproduction of mostly Latin and German language sources allows scientific researchers to examine the undertaking’s history and to arrive at new conclusions. Bibliography (Chapter 10) The bibliography contains detailed reference to all literary sources used in the book, thereby making possible a comprehensive unearthing of Lipszky’s activities. Annex (Chapter 11) This volume contains György Gyurikovits’ biography of János Lipszky, which has been regrettably forgotten. Due to its interesting nature and difficulties in editing it, the document is contained in the annex. The annex further contains tables that are not independent documents and therefore would not fit in the previous chapter or thematic compilations based on sources, e.g. the compilation of the Repertorium’s quality-column or remarks by Lajos Schedius in the Repertorium. 454
