IDEGEN NYELVŰ ÖSSZEFOGLALÓK - The Making of Hungary’s First General Map in the first Decade of the 19th Century. The Cartographic Enterprise of János Lipszky

meticulous and wide-ranging two-volume work of Johannes Dörflinger merits special attention: the ideas and findings of that work played a major role in the formation of the present study, while personal assistance received from the Viennese professor had significant impact on the author. Sources and their place of occurrence It became evident during the research that although individual archives contain important manuscript source materials on János Lipszky’s cartographic undertaking, literature so far has not deemed its processing necessary, or perhaps it might had been even overlooked. The present book shall pay particular attention to archival sources for that very reason, and shall contain verbatim citations of the most important documents. Key materials with respect to both the family as well as the undertaking are found in the Hungarian National Archives. The archives of the Hungarian Royal Chancellery, Council of Governor-general, Transylvanian Gubernium as well as some family archives fonds contributed abundant information to research. The archives of the Council of Governor-general enjoy the most prominent place among all, where the Lipszky-venture was an independent source among other cases. In addition to the documents of the national authorities, county archives also played an important role in the reconstruction of the counties’ contribution: the staff of county archives carried out their discovery, which proved to be a great help to the author. Furthermore, the Budapest City Archives contain relevant documents precious because of their quality rather than their quantity. Based on such documents, it became apparent that at the time of working on the map, Lipszky was staying in Pest-Buda. Moreover, the contract concluded with coppersmiths was also found in the Budapest City Archives, a unique source for the drawing of the map. From Austrian archives, documents found in the Österreichisches Statsarchiv, Kriegsarchiv are noteworthy: Lipszky’s military career could be reconstructed on an almost day-to-day basis from these files, and the undertakings of military authorities could also be partially recreated from these sources. The Regional Archives of Trencsén (Státny okresny archív v Trencíne) and the Regional Archives of Nagybiccse (Státny oblastny archív v Bycti) among Slovakian archives contain unique information relating to the history of the Lipszky family. The latter archives contains the significantly diminished but still extremely valuable Lipszky document bequest, which provided ample information about Lipszky’s military activities and cartographic undertaking. 433
