LEVÉLTÁR (GYÖR-SOPRON COUNTY ARCHIVES NO. 2) 9401 SOPRON Beloiannisz tér 1. (Pf. 82.) Tel. 12-198 Director: Dr. Zoltán HORVÁTH Prior to 1968 the predecessor of the Archives was the Sopron State Archives, established in 1950 by the unification of the archives of the former Sopron county and of Sopron city. Sopron was namely a free royal city up to 1870 and later a municipal city with equal standing to the county. Sopron county was united with Győr-Moson county in 1950, while Sopron received the rank of a city equal to a district. Even after 1950 the Archives collects material from the area of the historical Sopron county, i.e. the present boroughs Kapuvár and Csorna, raised to city rank lately (1969,1971). The history of the archival material of the county was full of vicissitudes. In the times of the Turkish peril the gentry of the county celebrated its assemblies and law courts and hid its archives in various places. The standing county seat was Nemeskér from 1651, Sopron from 1786. The archives found a final seat in the county hall, built in 1832, now the seat of the District Office. One hundred years later five rooms were furnished with cases in empire style, following the pattern of the furniture made in 1832. The windows of the archives are embellished by the coats of arms of the former noble families of the county in glass mosaic, while the paintings above the cases depict the castles and nobilitary homes in the county. Here in one of the rooms one finds the eighteenth century glazed tile stove of the former Nemeskér county hall.
