Győr-Sopron Megyei l.sz. Levéltár (Győr-Sopron County Archives (No.l.)

The archival material of the Győr-Sopron County Archives No. 1 (till 1968 Győr State Archives) comprises the archives of the municipality of Győr county (formerly existing in the territory of Győr-Sopron county, established in 1950), of the municipality of the free royal city Győr, of the municipality of Moson county (existing up to 1923), of Mosonmagyaróvár borough and of the districts having existed in the named counties. Since the establish* ment of the council system (1950) the Archives regularly collects and preserves the records of historical value of the county organism, institutions, enterprises and those active in Győr city, the Győr and Mosonmagyaróvár districts and the latter borough. The archives of Győr county, the "archivum comitatus" is first mentioned in the journal of the 1721 general assembly of the county. In the framework of county administration, however, the archives began its activity in 1805 only, when the Lord Lieutenant nominated Kristóf SCHEDIUS archivist of Győr county. Of his successors Károly RATH, member of the Academy, is outstanding by his scientific historical activity; it was during his service (1867-1868) that the arrangement of the archival material was begun. The archives of Moson county is first mentioned in the journal of the 1683 general assembly, as the Lord Lieutenant let the most valuable county records bring to his own home, in order to save them from the vicissitudes of the anti-Turkish liberation wars. The archives started as a self-standing organ in 1842 under the direction of István MOLNÁR. The first date on the archives of Győr city is found in the middle of the eighteenth century, but it began to work as a self-standing institution in 1846 only, when the city council established a separate office of archivist. The comprehensive arrangement of the material was executed in the term of office of the archivist Ferenc SEFCSIK between 1896 and 1933. Since 1950 the Archives preserves the records of the Győr cathedral chapter and the Pannonhalma Benedictine abbey as places of authenticity; they contain charters sporadically from the thirteenth century on, continually from 1534 or 1601, respectively. According to the enumerated organs the archival material of Győr-Sopron County Archives No. 1 is divided into various major units. Győr county is one of the royal counties founded by Stephen I, but its records have been annihilated by the Turkish ravages in the sixteenth century, except a few documents. The county archives handed down to our day
