Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén Megyei Levéltár (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Archives)

according to subjects (Species) up to 1799; from 1800 the council records are actually a continuous series up to 1908, with the exception of two Miscellanea series (1793—1847 and 1823—1945), containing mixed records. From 1909 the bulk of the city archival material is presented as the mayor's papers; this large series mirrors the change in the status of the city and runs under the mentioned name to 1949. Besides there are archival groups derived from minor special and auxiliary offices. The county archives show breaks and lacks in the archival groups in the period between 1850 and 1871. Between 1872 and 1949 the problems of the counties are mirrored by records in a nationally uniform archival structure. A major defect is noticed only in Zemplén county, where the removal owing to World War II resulted in the total destruction of the Lord Lieutenant's records and a partial one of those of the sub-prefect up to 1944. In the county archives some collections have been formed, beyond the administrative material and the charters, such as the collection of armorial letters, that of the church and state civil registers' duplicates, that of secret deposits. Both at Miskolc and Sátoraljaújhely we find fragments of minor family archives, deposited either before 1950 already, or after this year, partly gathered in course of record salvage work of the archives. The records of the organs of special administration (Chief Inspectorate of Schools, Inspectorates of Schools, Inland Revenue Office), of corporations (guilds, Chamber for Industry and Commerce), of institutions (theatre, schools, etc.) of law courts and attorney's offices, finally of the council organs of various levels are collected by the archives since 1950. The archival material is arranged to 90 per cent., but the original or later finding aids are added to 70 per cent. only. Shortcomings are the greatest in the records of the district chief constables and of parish administration, generally in younger and minor archival groups, but the papers of the feudal period and the major archival groups of the capitalistic era are usually provided with adequate finding aids. The archival material totals 5387 running metres. The repository is in arrears with nearly as much in its collecting interest, on account of the lack of space. The majority of the arrears is made up by the records of the various great enterprises. No description of the Borsod county and Miskolc city portions of the archives has yet been published, there are only allusions on their history in various monographs and studies on local history. Data from the material of Zemplén county have been given in the volumes of the series Adalékok
